How to practice shifting on electric bass. Shifting is critically important, but it’s often something that gets overlooked by beginners. For years, I thought that shifting was something that was better avoided, and I made every effort to finger things in one position. For me, this habit was broken when I started playing upright bass seriously, because there is just no way to play upright without shifting all the time.
Once I started to practice shifting, my playing was freed up greatly, as I wasn’t just stuck in a single position of the neck. Here’s a short lesson on shifting, one I promise will ultimately have a dramatic effect on your playing. Below that, I’ve included another video of an upright player performing some incredible shifts. This should demonstrate what is possible with this technique, and how seamless shifts can sound.
